The word ‘bento’, originates from Chinese Southern Song Dynasty slang term biàndāng, which literally means ‘convenient’. Since being imported to Japan in the 16th century, bento - a single-portion take-out or home-packed meal, has become an important part of Japanese food culture.
Beyond the convenience of a packed meal, bento, prepared with care and love, conveys the feelings of the maker to the eater and stands as an essential communication tool in Japanese society.
